Visit of an 11-Teacher Delegation from Prince of Songkla University, Thailand

On the morning of May 23, 2019, Dr. Wongkot Phuphumirat, Assistant President of Prince ofSongkla University, Thailand, visited Jiangnan University, leading a delegation of 11 teachers from the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, the Department of Food Technology, and Faculty of Agro-Industry. On behalf of Jiangnan University, Cai Jianying, Deputy Director of the Office of International Exchange and Cooperation, met with the visitors. The other attendees from Jiangnan University are Dr. Liu Long, Deputy Deanof the School of Biological Engineering, Dr. Cao Chen, Assistant Dean of the School of Food Science and Technology, Mr. Feng Chao and Ms. Qin Jie from the Office of International Exchange and Cooperation. On behalf of the university, Deputy Director Cai Jianying firstly extended a warm welcome to the delegation from Prince of Songkla University, and then generally introduced the discipline construction, personnel training, scientific research, and international exchanges of the university. The cooperation and exchanges between the two universities were also reviewed. Dr. Wongkot Phuphumirat, in response, thanked the university for its warm reception and made relevant introductions about Prince of Songkla University and its faculties. Subsequently, the two sides conducted exchanges on how to promote the joint training of their undergraduate and graduate students and how to further research cooperation in related fields, thus reaching preliminary consensus on their future collaboration.

In the afternoon, the delegation visited the School of Food Science and Technology. The reception meeting was attended by Prof. Liu Yuanfa, Dean of the school; Dr. Xie Yunfei, Deputy Dean; Dr. Cao Chen, Assistant Dean; and Wang Yuanyuan, Secretary of the Office of International Exchange and Cooperation. Prof. Liu Yuanfa began the meeting by extending a warm welcome to the delegation. He said the “Belt and Road” University Alliance for Food Science and Education (the Alliance) built a bridge of communication between the two universities. This meeting would also enhance the cooperation and exchanges between both sides, and achieve joint discussion and sharing about student training, international joint laboratory construction, scientific research cooperation and so on, he added. Then Deputy Dean Xie Yunfei introduced the development of the school and explained in detail the school’s efforts made in international exchanges. Associate Professor Manee Vittayanont from the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, Prince of Songkla University, introduced the construction of the department and its teaching staff, and expressed affirmation and support for the future cooperation between the two universities. In the follow-up exchange, the two sides conducted an in-depth discussion on the mode of joint training of students, involving learning time, teaching content, etc. After the meeting, the delegation visited the National Engineering Research Center of Functional Food, the National Engineering Laboratory of Cereal Fermentation Technology, and the Cooperative Innovation Center.

Prince of Songkla University, a public university established in 1967 as the first university in southern Thailand, comprises 39 faculties, colleges and institutes, four hospitals and over 40 research centers. The central aims of the university are to raise the level of general education, to support regional industry and development, to achieve excellence in research and teaching, to provide academic services to communities and to play an active role in the preservation of the country’s artistic and cultural heritage. The university joined the Alliance in November 2018, actively participating in the construction and development of the Alliance, and seeking the healthy development of food education and food science and technology industry.
